Journey Japan eSIM review

3.5

The short answer. Journey Japan eSIM sells prepaid travel eSIM plans for one country, Japan, and its cheapest rate today is $1.08 per GB. Its median rate of $1.59 per GB is about 42% above the $1.12 median across other sellers' Japan plans of 10 GB to 50 GB. Anywhere but Japan it is no use to you, so it is worth a look only if Japan is the whole trip.

Have we checked these prices?

These prices are not from a feed. Each night we read the price printed on each of their six plan pages, check it against the price data built into the same page, and add the 10% tax their checkout charges. The same run opens the 10 GB checkout to confirm the total is still the page price plus tax. We do not open the other five checkouts each night, and we have never bought a plan from them. If a page fails a check, the run stops and the last prices we read stay up. Last read on 16 October 2026.

Journey Japan eSIM did not pay for this review or this rating. The rating is computed from live catalogue data and cannot be bought. If you buy through a link on this page we may earn a commission, and the price you pay stays exactly the same.
About Journey Japan eSIM

Who is Journey Japan eSIM?

Journey Japan eSIM sells eSIMs for Japan and nowhere else. It is run by SekaiStudios Inc., a Tokyo company, and fronted by the YouTuber Chris Broad of Abroad in Japan. Its launch post is dated March 2025. We list the six plans on its site: 10, 20 and 50 GB for 30 days, and unlimited data for 7, 15 or 30 days.

It is one of the dearest sellers we list for Japan. Its plan pages show prices before tax and its checkout adds 10% Japan Consumption Tax, so the prices in our tables are the checkout totals. Trustpilot showed 4.8 out of 5 from 326 reviews when we looked on 12 October 2026.

CompanySekaiStudios Inc., named on the Commerce Disclosure page of their site. On 12 October 2026 we found it on the corporate register of Japan's National Tax Agency as 株式会社セカイスタジオ, corporate number 4010401136776. Their site does not print the number, so we matched it by name and address HQ3F, 5-4-16 Hiroo, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, their site says. Read this before you buy from Journey Japan eSIM

Journey Japan eSIM is a Japan only seller run by a registered Tokyo company and fronted by a well known YouTuber. It has a high Trustpilot score, and its unlimited plans have no daily limit by its own account. It is also one of the dearest sellers we list for Japan, and its page prices leave out a 10% tax that is added at checkout. Its terms leave very little room for a refund.

  • The company is on the official register. Their Commerce Disclosure page names SekaiStudios Inc. at an address in Hiroo, Tokyo. On 12 October 2026 we searched the corporate register of Japan's National Tax Agency and found one company of that name, 株式会社セカイスタジオ, number 4010401136776, at the same address. The number was assigned on 21 February 2018 and the company took its present name on 25 May 2023. Their site does not print the number, so the match is ours, made by name and address.
  • A YouTuber fronts it. Their launch post of 14 March 2025 is signed by Chris Broad of Abroad in Japan and headed as the reason he launched it. Their site does not explain how he and the company are connected, so we do not call him the owner.
  • The checkout charges 10% more than the plan pages show. On 12 October 2026 we opened the checkout for all six plans from a UK connection. Each one added a line called Japan Consumption Tax (10%) before any email or address was entered: $19.00 became $20.90, $29.00 became $31.90, $49.00 became $53.90 and $79.00 became $86.90. We publish those totals, and our nightly run reads one checkout page to confirm the tax is still added. We did not go on to the payment step, so we cannot say whether the tax changes with the buyer's country.
  • Their own FAQ says there are no extra charges. Its answer on hidden fees is that there are none at all. On 12 October 2026 the only page we found that mentions the tax was the Commerce Disclosure, linked in the footer, which says prices exclude consumption tax. None of the six plan pages mentioned tax.
  • They are among the dearest sellers we list for Japan. On 12 October 2026, with tax, their 10 GB 30 day plan cost $20.90. That was the highest price among the 59 sellers in our tables with a 10 GB 30 day plan that works in Japan, where the lowest was $5.99 and the median $11.75. Their 20 GB plan was 52nd of 58 on price and their 50 GB plan 43rd of 52.
  • Their unlimited plans cost more than nearly all the others. On 12 October 2026 their 7 day plan at $31.90 was the dearest of 38 sellers with a 7 day unlimited plan for Japan. The 15 day plan was 32nd of 33 and the 30 day plan 30th of 32. Some of the cheaper plans slow down after a daily amount, and their pages say theirs do not. We have not tested that. Several of the low star reviews on Trustpilot describe slow speeds.
  • The refund terms are strict. Their terms say all sales are final, with a refund only at their discretion and only for a verified technical fault. Their FAQ lists a plan that was never activated among the things they do not refund. Two reviewers on Trustpilot described refund trouble when we read the low star reviews on 12 October 2026, and a third said they were refunded after the eSIM would not install.
  • The Trustpilot score is high and recent. On 12 October 2026 it showed 4.8 from 326 reviews, 321 of them from the last 12 months, and Trustpilot showed the company had replied to 80% of its negative reviews. Trustpilot's own note on the profile said the company had not asked customers for reviews recently. The low star reviews were mostly about slow speeds, or LTE where 5G was expected, and weak signal in rural areas.
  • We read their prices from their plan pages. They have no price feed for us, so each night we read the price printed on the six plan pages, check it against the price data built into each page, and add the tax. On 25 September 2026 that data disagreed with the price shown on three of the six pages. They had corrected all three when we looked again on 3 October.

We list Journey Japan eSIM because its prices are real and its plans rank on the same maths as everyone else's. We publish what we could not verify so you can decide with the facts in front of you.

Technical details

How Journey Japan eSIM works, in detail

Activation
Buy on their website. The eSIM comes by email as a QR code and an activation code, with install steps. Their checkout says it arrives in about 5 minutes and their FAQ says 5 to 15. Their plan pages say no eSIM can be activated from Tuesday 9 PM to Wednesday 10 AM Japan time each week, because of network maintenance.
Plan type
Data only. Their FAQ says the plans come with no local phone number and suggests calling through apps.
Validity clock
Their pages do not agree. The plan pages say activation is automatic on arrival in Japan. One FAQ answer says a fixed data plan activates when it is installed on most phones, while an unlimited plan starts when it first connects to a network in Japan. A plan that has not started 45 days after purchase is started by them, or 180 days after purchase for the unlimited plans. The days then run whether you use it or not.
Hotspot sharing
Yes on all six plans, their pages say. On the 10, 20 and 50 GB plans hotspot use comes out of the plan's own data, their blog says. Their pages give the unlimited plans a separate hotspot allowance of 1 GB for each day of the plan, as one total: 15 GB on the 15 day plan and 30 GB on the 30 day plan. They do not say what happens when that runs out.
5G access
Listed on every plan page. The 10, 20 and 50 GB pages give the speed as 4G, 5G and LTE, and the unlimited pages give it as 5G. Their pages add that 5G is there in supported areas and that results may vary. They publish no speed in Mbps.
Top ups
On the 10, 20 and 50 GB plans only, their FAQ says. A top up is bought from the eSIM profile linked in the confirmation email. It is added to the same eSIM and extends the time as well as the data. Sizes and prices are not on their public pages, and top ups are not refunded.
ID checks (KYC)
None mentioned on their pages. Their checkout asked only for an email address and a name when we opened it on 12 October 2026.
Apps
No app. We found none on the App Store or Google Play on 12 October 2026. You buy on their website and install from the email they send.
Payments
Cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay, in US dollars, their pages say. The prices on their plan pages do not include tax. Their checkout adds a line called Japan Consumption Tax (10%) before you enter any details. We saw it on all six plans on 12 October 2026, from a UK connection.
Refunds
Strict. Their terms say all sales are final. A refund is at their discretion, and only for a verified technical fault that stops the eSIM from activating or working. Their FAQ lists plans that were never activated among the cases they do not refund, so a cancelled trip gets nothing back under the written terms. There is also no refund for a locked or unsupported phone, a deleted eSIM, slow speeds or a top up. Their pages give no time limit and no set way to ask, other than contacting support.
Support
Chat and a contact form on their site, email, and a Tokyo phone number on their Commerce Disclosure page. Their site says support is open 24 hours a day in English, and one of their pages describes it as a chatbot or the customer team. They give no reply time.

What real Journey Japan eSIM customers say

4.8 / 5 Trustpilot, 326 reviews. Collected independently of us, checked Oct 2026.

Most praised

  • 89% of the 326 reviews gave five stars when we looked on 12 October 2026

Most complained about

  • Slow speeds, or LTE where the buyer expected 5G
  • Weak signal in rural areas
  • One buyer said a promised refund had not arrived about six weeks later
  • One buyer said the activation email never came and that they were told there was no refund process

Check before you buy

  • The price on their site is not the price you pay. On 12 October 2026 their page showed $19.00 for the 10 GB plan and the checkout total was $20.90, because 10% Japan Consumption Tax is added. Our tables show the total. Their FAQ says there are no additional charges, and only their Commerce Disclosure page says prices exclude the tax
  • Their terms say a plan you have not started is started for you. That happens 45 days after purchase on the 10, 20 and 50 GB plans and 180 days after purchase on the unlimited plans. The days then count down wherever you are
  • The 10, 20 and 50 GB pages list the validity as a 30 day guarantee. Nothing on their site ties that to money back, and their terms say all sales are final
  • Their pages disagree on when the days start for the 10, 20 and 50 GB plans. The plan pages say on arrival in Japan and one FAQ answer says when the eSIM is installed. Their terms refuse a refund for installing and connecting early, so ask their support before you install one ahead of a trip
  • No eSIM can be activated from Tuesday 9 PM to Wednesday 10 AM Japan time, their plan pages say. Their Commerce Disclosure page gives the window as 10 PM to 9 AM and says activation completes by itself afterwards
  • Their pages give hotspot on the unlimited plans as one total for the whole plan, not a daily amount: 15 GB on the 15 day plan and 30 GB on the 30 day plan. Their FAQ adds that hotspot needs an APN typed in by hand and may be slower on a laptop
  • A deleted eSIM cannot be installed again. Their pages say the activation code works once and that you would have to buy a new plan
  • Their two phone lists differ. The compatibility page starts at iPhone XR and XS, and the Commerce Disclosure page starts at iPhone SE (3rd generation). A phone that turns out not to work is not refunded
  • On 12 October 2026 their site showed a star rating beside each plan with no source and no review count. We go by Trustpilot
  • Each plan page names one network, NTT Docomo for the 10, 20 and 50 GB plans and KDDI for the unlimited plans. Other text on the same pages says NTT Docomo and KDDI without saying which plan uses which

Questions

Journey Japan eSIM FAQ

What people ask before they buy a Journey Japan eSIM, answered from live data

Is Journey Japan eSIM legit?

Journey Japan eSIM is sold by SekaiStudios Inc., a Tokyo company named in the legal notice on its site. On 12 October 2026 we found that company on Japan's official corporate register, where it has had a number since 2018. Its six plans are on our Japan page, and the table on this page shows the three with a fixed data size. We read its prices from its plan pages every night and add the 10% tax its checkout charges. Trustpilot shows 4.8 out of 5 from 326 reviews, collected independently of us. Our own rating of 3.5 out of 5 is computed from prices and coverage and cannot be bought.

How much does a Journey Japan eSIM cost?

Journey Japan eSIM plans run from $20.90 to $86.90. Ranked by real price per GB the best rate is 50 GB for 30 Days at $53.90, which is $1.08 per GB. Across the whole catalogue the median is $1.59 per GB against a median of $1.12 across other sellers' Japan plans of 10 GB to 50 GB, so a typical Journey Japan eSIM plan is dearer than those.

Does Journey Japan eSIM have a discount code?

Not one we can vouch for. We only publish Journey Japan eSIM promo codes that we have tested at its checkout, and there is no working code right now. Most codes on coupon sites are expired, so check the total on the payment page before you count on a discount.

Which countries does Journey Japan eSIM cover?

1 country in our catalogue. The cheapest Journey Japan eSIM destination by price per GB right now is Japan ($1.08). Every country in the table on this page links to its full comparison, where Journey Japan eSIM is ranked against every other provider we track.

Can I use a Journey Japan eSIM as a hotspot?

Yes on all six plans, their pages say. On the 10, 20 and 50 GB plans hotspot use comes out of the plan's own data, their blog says. Their pages give the unlimited plans a separate hotspot allowance of 1 GB for each day of the plan, as one total: 15 GB on the 15 day plan and 30 GB on the 30 day plan. They do not say what happens when that runs out.

Does Journey Japan eSIM sell unlimited data plans?

Three plans, for 7, 15 and 30 days. Their pages say phone data has no daily limit and is not slowed down. They told us by email on 25 September 2026 that these plans have no daily limit. We show these plans as unlimited with no daily amount. We have not tested the speed. Hotspot on these plans has its own cap.

How do I install a Journey Japan eSIM?

Buy on their website. The eSIM comes by email as a QR code and an activation code, with install steps. Their checkout says it arrives in about 5 minutes and their FAQ says 5 to 15. Their plan pages say no eSIM can be activated from Tuesday 9 PM to Wednesday 10 AM Japan time each week, because of network maintenance. Their pages do not agree on when a 10, 20 or 50 GB plan starts, and one FAQ answer says it starts when it is installed. Ask their support before you install one of those ahead of your trip. Their FAQ says an unlimited plan starts when it first connects to a network in Japan and can be installed before you leave. A deleted eSIM cannot be installed again, their pages say, so do not remove it once it is on the phone.
