Hotspot on a travel eSIM: which plans block tethering
You can tether on almost every travel eSIM. That is the short answer, and it is backed by data: of the 236,811 live plans we track from 61 sellers, 204,387 allow hotspot. A small number of sellers block it on every plan they sell. So the permission question is mostly settled.
The real problem with hotspot on a travel eSIM is not permission. It is that a laptop consumes data like nothing else you carry, and the plan you bought for a phone was never sized for it. This guide covers which plans allow tethering, why the hotspot toggle sometimes refuses to appear, the APN fix that solves the Android cases, and what tethering actually costs in data.
Who allows it, from our data
We record a tethering flag on every plan, taken from the seller's own plan terms. Counted in September 2026, the picture was simple.
| Seller | Live plans | Hotspot |
|---|---|---|
| Every seller not named below | 179,781 | Allowed on every plan |
| AloOui, AirPlans, CocoRoam, Textr, CloudOn, Travel eSIM, GigaPanda | 18,868 | Not supported on any plan |
| MyEsimGlobal | 1,089 | Allowed on 374 of them |
So if your eSIM will not hotspot, it is almost certainly a settings problem rather than a plan restriction, unless the plan is from one of the sellers in the second row.
Why the hotspot toggle will not appear
The eSIM is not the data line
On iPhone, the Personal Hotspot option only shows for the line selected under Settings, Cellular, Cellular Data. If your home SIM is still the data line, the hotspot uses that, and either roams expensively or does nothing. Select the travel eSIM as the data line first. On Android, Settings, Connections, SIM manager, Mobile data, choose the eSIM.
Data roaming is off for the eSIM
A travel eSIM is a roaming line. If roaming is off for it, the phone has no data, and a hotspot with no data connects your laptop to nothing. Turn roaming on for the eSIM line only.
iPhone shows Set Up Personal Hotspot
That message means the carrier settings for the line do not include hotspot configuration yet. Restart the phone with WiFi off, then check Settings, General, About for a carrier settings update. If it persists after that, the plan genuinely does not include hotspot, which on our data means it is from one of the sellers that blocks it.
The Android APN fix
The classic Android failure: data works on the phone, the hotspot starts, the laptop connects, and nothing loads. The phone is using the eSIM's APN for its own traffic but has not been told the same APN is allowed for tethered traffic. The fix takes a minute.
- Settings, Connections, Mobile networks, Access Point Names. Make sure the eSIM is the selected SIM at the top.
- Open the APN in use. If it is locked, duplicate it with the menu and edit the copy.
- Find APN type. It usually reads default, supl. Change it to default, supl, dun.
- Save. Select the new APN if you created a copy. Toggle the hotspot off and on.
The dun entry tells Android that this access point may carry tethered traffic. Some manufacturers hide the field, in which case a restart after selecting the eSIM as the data line often does the same job.
What tethering costs in data
A phone browsing and messaging uses 300 to 500 MB a day. A laptop doing ordinary work uses several times that, mostly from things you did not ask it to do.
- Operating system updates: 500 MB to several GB, and they start on their own.
- Cloud sync: Dropbox, OneDrive, iCloud Drive and Google Drive upload every file you touch and download every file a colleague touches.
- Video calls: 500 MB to over 1 GB per hour on a laptop, higher than on a phone because the camera and screen resolution are higher.
- Browser tabs: every tab with autoplay video is a stream you are not watching.
A working day on a laptop, without video calls, sits around 2 to 4 GB. With calls, 5 GB or more. That is why a week of laptop work on a 5 GB plan is over by Tuesday.
Set the connection as metered
Windows: Settings, Network, WiFi, the hotspot network, Metered connection on. macOS: System Settings, WiFi, the hotspot network, Low Data Mode on. Both hold back updates and most background sync until you are on real WiFi. Do this before connecting, not after the update has started.
Unlimited plans and tethering: the trap
Unlimited plans sound ideal for a laptop. They are the worst choice, because nearly all of them have a daily full speed cap, and tethering runs through it. In September 2026, 26,677 of the plans we track capped full speed at 1 GB a day or less. A laptop burns that in an hour, and the remaining twenty three hours are at 256 kbps, which will not load a web page. Our guide to fair use caps has the full breakdown by cap size.
For laptop work, buy a large pool instead. In our September 2026 read the 21 to 50 GB tier averaged $1.30 per GB, and the cheapest plans in that tier were under $0.30 per GB. A 20 GB pool used over a working week is a better deal than any unlimited plan with a cap below 3 GB a day.
For a working trip: filter our country pages to plans of 20 GB and up with the tethering flag, set the laptop as metered, and download the big updates on the hotel WiFi. The phone's plan will then last the week.
Tablets and second phones
An iPad or a second phone connected to the hotspot behaves like a phone, not a laptop, so the data cost is modest. The exception is a tablet with automatic app updates and photo sync switched on, which behaves like a laptop. Check both before you connect it. If the second device has its own eSIM slot, a separate small plan for it is often cheaper than sharing, because each device then has its own daily allowance on an unlimited plan.
One more setting on iPhone
Maximise Compatibility, under Personal Hotspot, switches the hotspot from 5 GHz to 2.4 GHz WiFi. Older laptops and some hotel room devices only connect on 2.4 GHz. If the laptop can see the hotspot but not join it, that toggle is the usual answer.
Questions people ask
Can I use a travel eSIM as a hotspot?
On nearly every plan, yes. Of the 236,811 plans we track, 204,387 allow tethering. Most sellers allow it on every plan; a few block it on every plan, and one allows it on some plans only. If tethering matters, check the plan's features line on our comparison table before buying.
Why does my eSIM hotspot not turn on?
Usually because the eSIM is not the phone's active data line, or data roaming is off for it. On iPhone the Personal Hotspot toggle only appears for the line selected under Cellular Data. Fix the data line first and the hotspot option appears.
Does hotspot use more data than the phone?
Not by itself, but the devices you connect do. A laptop runs updates, cloud sync and background apps that a phone would not, and a single Windows update can be 1 GB. Set the laptop's connection as metered so it holds those back.
Why does my unlimited eSIM slow down when I tether?
Because tethering runs through the same daily allowance. A laptop uses the 1 GB or 2 GB full speed allowance in an hour or two, and then everything is throttled until the reset. Unlimited plans are the worst choice for laptop work unless the daily cap is 3 GB or more.
What is the APN fix for hotspot on Android?
If data works on the phone but the hotspot connects with no internet, open the eSIM's APN settings and add dun to the APN type field, so it reads something like default, supl, dun. Save, toggle the hotspot off and on. This tells the phone the APN is allowed for tethered traffic.
Can the seller tell I am tethering?
Yes, networks can detect tethered traffic. Sellers that allow it do not care. Sellers that forbid it in their terms can block it, and a few throttle tethered traffic separately. That is why we record the tethering flag per plan rather than assuming.
