Coverage

Which mobile networks does Thailand have?

Thailand's operators pushed 5G population coverage above 95% by December 2025, and 4G reaches about 97 to 98% of the population. Both big networks report over 99% coverage in the Bangkok metropolitan area.

  • AIS: AIS runs Thailand's largest mobile network, with 4G reaching above 98% of the population, and its users spent the most time on an active 5G connection in Opensignal's 2025 testing.
  • True: True merged with dtac in March 2023 to form the second giant, reported 93% nationwide 5G population coverage in February 2025, and plans 98% by the end of 2026.
  • dtac: dtac survives as a True Corporation brand after the merger and still sells its own entry level tourist SIM range on the True network.

Since the True and dtac merger Thailand is effectively a duopoly of AIS and True, and MVNOs play almost no role in the tourist market.

The eSIM plans we compare on this page connect to:

AIS 5G CAT 4G DTAC 5G True Move 4G TrueMove H 5G

Is 5G available in Thailand?

AIS and True both run nationwide 5G. True claimed 93% 5G population coverage in early 2025, and coverage is thickest in Bangkok and the Eastern Economic Corridor.

Data guide

How much data do you need in Thailand?

Light use is about 500 MB a day. That covers maps, messages, and some browsing. Normal use with photos, social apps, and short videos runs 1 to 1.5 GB a day. Streaming and hotspot use can eat 2 to 3 GB a day. Here is what each size costs in Thailand right now:

eSIM or a local SIM at the airport in Thailand?

An eSIM is ready before you land. No queue, no shop, no handing over your passport at a counter. Data for Thailand starts at $11.19 on this page, which is hard for airport kiosks to beat. A local SIM still makes sense if you need a local phone number or plan to stay for months. For a normal trip, the eSIM wins on price and effort.

Setup

Setting up your Thailand eSIM

1

Buy your planYou get a QR code by email within minutes of paying.

2

Install before you flyScan the QR code on wifi at home. Airport and hotel wifi can be weak.

3

Turn it on when you landEnable the eSIM and turn on data roaming for it, then give it a minute to find the network.

4

Check the validity clockSome plans start counting at purchase, not at first use. Check before you buy.

Local rules

Good to know before you land in Thailand

SIM registration is mandatory and strictly enforced. Staff register the SIM to your passport on the spot, it takes about 5 minutes, and NBTC rules cap you at 3 SIMs per person per brand.

AIS, True and dtac counters in the Suvarnabhumi arrivals hall are open 24 hours. Tourist SIMs mostly run 299 to 799 THB, roughly 8 to 23 dollars, depending on data and validity.

AIS is the safer pick outside the big cities thanks to the largest network, while True is very strong in Bangkok. Both cover the main islands well.

Thailand Travel eSIM FAQ

Everything you need to know about using an eSIM in Thailand

What is the cheapest eSIM for Thailand?

Right now the cheapest option ranked by price per GB is MegaEsim with 50 GB for 10 Days at $11.19. That works out to $0.22 per GB. Prices change often, so the table above always shows the current order.

Which networks will my eSIM connect to in Thailand?

The plans we compare connect to AIS, CAT, DTAC, True Move, TrueMove H. The exact network depends on the plan you pick. Check the plan details before you buy if one network matters to you.

Do Thailand eSIMs support 5G?

20 of the 21 plans we track for Thailand include 5G where the local network offers it. The rest run on 4G, which is still fine for maps, calls over apps, and video.

Can I top up my Thailand eSIM if I run out?

Yes. 20 of the 21 plans here support top ups, so you can add data without buying a new eSIM. The rest need a fresh plan once the data ends.

Will I still receive bank SMS and OTP codes?

Yes, if you keep your home SIM active. Travel eSIMs are data only. Your phone can hold both at once, so leave your normal SIM on for SMS and use the eSIM for data. Turn off roaming data on the home SIM to avoid charges.

Do these eSIMs include a phone number or calls?

The plans we compare are data only, so there is no local number. Calls work fine over WhatsApp, FaceTime, or any app that uses data. If you need a real local number, a local SIM is the better tool.

How many GB do I need for a week in Thailand?

Around 3 to 5 GB covers a week of maps, messaging, and normal browsing. Heavy video or hotspot use needs 1 to 2 GB per day. Today the cheapest plan with at least 5 GB is MegaEsim at $3.78.
