Airalo is the biggest name in travel eSIMs. Founded in 2019 and run from Singapore by AirGSM Pte Ltd, it became the industry's first unicorn in July 2025 with a 220 million dollar Series C led by CVC at a valuation above 1 billion dollars, with telecom giants like e&, Telefonica, Orange and Deutsche Telekom among its earlier backers. It claims more than 20 million users across 200+ countries.
The app is the heart of the experience: buy, install directly without a QR code, track usage and top up, all in one place, with 4.6 stars from roughly 100,000 iOS ratings and 4.5 from 182,000 on Android. Most plans are data only, but the Discover+ global plans add calls and texts with an Austrian +43 number across 120+ countries.
Scale cuts both ways. Support runs 24/7 on chat, email and WhatsApp, yet slow responses at peak are a recurring complaint, and its Trustpilot score sits at 4.1, solid but below several smaller rivals. In our price tables Airalo is rarely the cheapest option; you pay a premium for the ecosystem.
