Which mobile networks does Uganda have?
MTN and Airtel together serve more than 90% of Ugandan subscribers, and MTN's 4G alone covered 88.6% of the population at the end of 2025.
- MTN: MTN Uganda is the market leader with about 52% of subscribers, and by the end of 2025 its 3G reached 96.2% of the population and its 4G 88.6%.
- Airtel: Airtel Uganda is a close second with about 46% of subscribers and switched on its 5G network just two days after MTN in July 2023.
- Uganda Telecom: Uganda Telecom is the struggling former incumbent with a marginal share, and its bid for 5G spectrum failed against MTN and Airtel.

Is 5G available in Uganda?
MTN launched 5G on 28 July 2023 in Kampala and Airtel followed two days later. MTN's 5G reached about 19% of the population by the end of 2025, still concentrated in Kampala and major cities.

SIM registration is mandatory and verified against the national ID database, so a passport is required. Uganda scrapped its social media tax in July 2021 and replaced it with a 12% excise duty on data, which is baked into bundle prices.
MTN has a stand at Entebbe airport in the baggage collection hall. Staff scan your passport, take your photo and want local cash, and there is an ATM in the same hall.
