A CPF tax number is not legally required for foreigners, but registration with a passport only works at official carrier stores and staff often wrongly insist on a CPF. Prepaid SIMs are surprisingly hard to buy on arrival at Brazilian airports. At Guarulhos, TIM SIMs are sold at the ground floor pharmacy near arrivals and there are Vivo, Claro and TIM stores in the terminals, with the SIM itself costing about 10 to 15 BRL, but city stores are cheaper and easier.
Coverage is strong along the coast and in big cities but thins out fast inland and in the Amazon. Vivo has the largest network footprint, which makes it the safer pick outside the main metros.
