The Republic of the Congo had 6.33 million mobile connections in January 2025, about 98.7 percent of the population, but only 66.8 percent of connections ran on 3G or 4G networks. Mobile internet subscribers grew 61 percent in five years to 3.4 million, per ARPCE. Coverage centres on Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire.

  • MTN Congo: MTN is the market leader and controlled 60 percent of the mobile market in October 2023, per regulator ARPCE.
  • Airtel Congo: Airtel held the remaining 40 percent of the two-player private market in October 2023 and offers good nationwide coverage.
  • Congo Telecom: State-owned Congo Telecom entered the mobile market in December 2023 as a third player.

Is 5G available in Congo?

There is no commercial 5G in Congo-Brazzaville. MTN and Airtel have been in talks to share network infrastructure partly to spread the cost of future 5G upgrades, but service has not launched.

eSIM or a local SIM at the airport in Congo?

An eSIM is ready before you land. No queue, no shop, no handing over your passport at a counter. Data for Congo starts at $17.30 on this page, which is hard for airport kiosks to beat. A local SIM still makes sense if you need a local phone number or plan to stay for months. For a normal trip, the eSIM wins on price and effort.

Local rules

Good to know before you land in Congo

SIM registration against a passport is required, and the regulator ARPCE has run enforcement deadlines to cut off unregistered SIMs. Registration forms are in French.

MTN and Airtel both have phone shops in the arrivals hall at Brazzaville's Maya-Maya airport, open from about 07:00 to 21:00, and you walk straight past them on the way out. Staff copy your passport and register the SIM there.

MTN and Airtel are both solid choices, so compare bundle prices at the airport shops. If your French is limited, ask the shop staff to complete the registration form. An eSIM avoids the paperwork entirely.

Congo Travel eSIM FAQ

Everything you need to know about using an eSIM in Congo

What is the cheapest eSIM for Congo?

Right now the cheapest option ranked by price per GB is MegaEsim with 3 GB for 15 Days at $17.30. That works out to $5.77 per GB. Prices change often, so the table above always shows the current order.

Which networks will my eSIM connect to in Congo?

The plans we compare connect to Airtel. The exact network depends on the plan you pick. Check the plan details before you buy if one network matters to you.

Do Congo eSIMs support 5G?

The networks our plans use in Congo currently run on 4G. That is enough for maps, messaging, video calls, and streaming in most cases.

Can I top up my Congo eSIM if I run out?

Yes. 11 of the 11 plans here support top ups, so you can add data without buying a new eSIM. The rest need a fresh plan once the data ends.

Will I still receive bank SMS and OTP codes?

Yes, if you keep your home SIM active. Travel eSIMs are data only. Your phone can hold both at once, so leave your normal SIM on for SMS and use the eSIM for data. Turn off roaming data on the home SIM to avoid charges.

Do these eSIMs include a phone number or calls?

The plans we compare are data only, so there is no local number. Calls work fine over WhatsApp, FaceTime, or any app that uses data. If you need a real local number, a local SIM is the better tool.
