Which mobile networks does Macau have?
Macau is tiny and densely covered. The 2022 5G licences required half the territory covered within one year and the full territory within 18 months.
- CTM: Macau's main operator with the most developed 5G footprint, and the only one that opens 5G to prepaid users as of April 2025.
- China Telecom Macau: The second 5G licence holder, running its own 5G network across the territory.
- 3 Macau: The Hutchison brand still operates in Macau but declined a 5G licence, so its service tops out at 4G.
SmarTone shut down its Macau network on 11 November 2024, leaving three mobile networks in the territory.

eSIM or a local SIM at the airport in Macau?

A local SIM still makes sense if you need a local phone number or plan to stay for months. For a normal trip, the eSIM wins on price and effort.
