Which mobile networks does Vietnam have?
Vietnam's 5G reached 90% of the population by February 2026, with close to 40,000 base stations installed and about 23 million 5G subscribers.
- Viettel: Viettel, run by the military, is the largest operator with the widest rural and mountain coverage, over 30,000 5G stations, and Vietnam's only fully standalone 5G network.
- Vinaphone: Vinaphone, the VNPT brand, has posted the fastest average download speeds at around 31.8 Mbps and performs strongly in Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City.
- MobiFone: MobiFone is the third national network with solid city coverage but a thinner footprint than Viettel once you leave urban areas.
A handful of MVNOs resell the main networks, but tourist SIMs and travel eSIMs almost always run on Viettel, Vinaphone or MobiFone.

eSIM or a local SIM at the airport in Vietnam?
An eSIM is ready before you land. No queue, no shop, no handing over your passport at a counter. Data for Vietnam starts at $9.63 on this page, which is hard for airport kiosks to beat. A local SIM still makes sense if you need a local phone number or plan to stay for months. For a normal trip, the eSIM wins on price and effort.

Good to know before you land in Vietnam
Physical SIMs must be registered in person with your passport at official carrier stores, which takes 10 to 20 minutes. eSIMs bought before arrival skip the paperwork.
Viettel, Vinaphone and MobiFone counters at Tan Son Nhat sell tourist SIMs for roughly 200,000 to 400,000 VND, about 8 to 16 dollars. Viettel's TOUR200 package at 200,000 VND gives 5 GB per day for 7 days plus calls.
For Ha Giang, Sapa, Cao Bang or anywhere in the northwest mountains, Viettel is the safe choice. Its 4G reaches valleys where the other networks drop to 3G or nothing.
