Is 5G available in Russia?

Good to know before you land in Russia
Since 1 January 2025, foreigners buying a Russian SIM need a SNILS number, a verified Gosuslugi account, biometric registration (face and voice) in the state system, and the SIM must be linked to the IMEI of one specific phone. On top of that, since 6 October 2025 any foreign SIM or eSIM connecting to a Russian network for the first time has mobile data blocked for roughly 24 hours.
Airport kiosks exist but are effectively useless for tourists now. Since January 2025 a legal SIM purchase requires a SNILS number and Gosuslugi account that foreign visitors cannot realistically get, and foreign Visa and Mastercard cards do not work at Russian payment terminals anyway.
Install a travel eSIM before arrival and expect the 24 hour data block on first connection, so download offline maps, tickets and translations in advance. Airport wifi typically requires a Russian phone number for SMS login, so do not count on it either.
