164 of these 644 plans were checked against the seller's own shop on 17 October 2026. The rest come from the seller's own feed or plan pages and are not yet independently checked.

The Watchdog Pick is the lowest real price per GB of the 644 plans in this view. Bulk data pools above 50 GB cannot win it, because their per GB rate only exists if you use data no traveller uses. Providers cannot pay for it. Unlimited plans show their fair use allowance instead of a per GB rate, because there is no per GB rate to compare.

Price per GB counts only data you can use inside the validity, at most 3 GB a day, so a big pool on a short validity cannot buy the top spot. Every provider's best two plans come first, then the rest. A plan marked Unverified price undercuts every other provider here by more than half and waits at the end until we have checked it on the seller's site. How we rank

Unlimited rows show the daily amount at full speed. Some rows also show the speed after that amount. A row with no speed does not mean the plan stays fast, so check the plan on the seller's site.

Travel smarter

Short answer. The cheapest Africa eSIM we track right now is Horizon eSIM, 20 GB for 30 Days at $26.33, which is $1.32 per GB, covering 6 countries on one eSIM. Checked 17 October 2026, 06:01 GMT.

Africa has the fewest regional plans and the highest prices per gigabyte of any region we track. Wholesale roaming across the continent is expensive, and that cost lands on the traveller.

As of 17 October 2026, 06:01 GMT, the best rate on an Africa plan is Horizon eSIM at $1.32 per GB: 20 GB for 30 Days at $26.33, across 6 countries. The median across all 644 plans is $6.54, so half of what is sold in this region costs more than that.

  • Smallest ticket price ASIMGO, Unlimited500 MB/day for 1 Day at $1.03. Useful for a short hop, rarely the best value per GB.
  • Best rate on a large plan Horizon eSIM, 20 GB for 30 Days at $26.33, $1.32 per GB. Buying bigger is almost always cheaper per GB than topping up twice.
  • Longest validity Roamix, 365 Days on one plan. Long itineraries lose money on short plans that have to be replaced.
  • Features across these plans 287 can be topped up, 366 advertise 5G, 558 allow hotspot use, and 335 are sold as unlimited.
Watchdog verdict

Which is the best eSIM for Africa?

Best depends on the trip, so here are the winners on today's numbers rather than one name. Each line is the first row of a different sort on the 644 live plans above:

  • Best value Horizon eSIM, 20 GB for 30 Days at $26.33: $1.32 per GB across 6 countries.
  • Widest coverage CloudOn, 36 countries on one eSIM, 3 GB for 30 Days at $22.99.
  • Best for a long trip Roamix, 365 Days on one plan, Unlimited1 GB/day at $2,751.60.
  • Highest daily cap on an unlimited plan MegaEsim, 1 Day at $37.23, full speed up to 10 GB a day. Set that daily cap against the fixed plans before you pay for the word unlimited.

An Africa eSIM only earns its keep once you cross a border. If the whole trip stays in one country, the single country plan usually wins, and the next section prices both sides.

The real question

Is an Africa eSIM worth it, or is one plan per country cheaper?

This is the comparison that decides the purchase, and nobody publishes it, so here it is from our own catalogue. We price both sides on the same basket: a plan of 5 to 50 GB lasting at least 15 days, which is what a real trip needs. Bulk data pools are excluded from both sides, because nobody buys 500 GB for a fortnight.

47

That regional figure is Horizon eSIM, 20 GB for 30 Days at $26.33, covering 6 countries. The country figure is the average of the cheapest comparable plan in each of the 47 countries we have prices for in this region.

The regional plan wins outright here, and it is not close. It comes in around 62% under the average country's own best plan at the same size. In a region where single country data is expensive, buying the regional plan is the default choice rather than the convenience option.

The averages hide a wide spread, and the spread is where the decision actually lives. The cheapest country in this region is Mayotte at $0.40 per GB on its own plan, well under the regional rate. The dearest is Sao Tome and Principe at $37.05. If your itinerary leans towards the expensive end, the regional plan is worth more than the averages suggest. If it leans cheap, buy per country.

Coverage

How many countries does an Africa eSIM actually cover?

There is no standard. Across the 644 plans on this page the country lists differ enormously, and the name on the plan tells you almost nothing. These are the widest plans each provider currently sells in this region.

ProviderWidest planPlans hereBest per GB
eSIMzio 36 countries 20 $2.50

Airalo 35 countries 23 $1.98

What goes wrong

Why African data costs what it does

There is no continent wide roaming agreement of the kind Europe has, so a regional plan here is a bundle of separate commercial deals. That is why the country lists differ so much between providers, and why the per gigabyte rate sits well above every other region.

The upside is that a regional plan is often better value than a single country plan in Africa, which is the opposite of the situation in Europe. The comparison further up this page shows both numbers for exactly this reason.

Coverage quality varies more than anywhere else. Cities are fine. Away from them, expect 3G, and expect it to disappear. Download maps before you travel and do not rely on a data connection for anything that has to work.

Unlimited

Are the unlimited Africa plans really unlimited?

No, and they are not sold as a trick either. 331 of the 644 plans here are unlimited in the fair use sense: full speed up to a daily allowance, then slower until the clock resets. A further 4 plans are unlimited in a different way: one capped speed for the whole plan, shown next to the word Unlimited in the table. The published daily allowances on these plans currently run from 0.5 GB to 10 GB a day. Past the cap the speed drops, often to 1 Mbps or less, which is fine for messages and maps and painful for video.

That is why unlimited plans carry no price per GB in our table. There is no honest per gigabyte number to print, so we show the daily allowance instead and leave the value verdict blank rather than invent one. At $1.32 per GB from the cheapest fixed plan here, unlimited only pays off if you genuinely burn several gigabytes a day.

Before you buy

How to pick the right Africa plan

1

Check the country list, not the plan nameOpen the plan and read which countries it covers. The table above shows the country count for every plan, and the shares further up show how often the tricky ones are actually included.

2

Compare against the single country pagesThe cheapest plan for your main stop may beat the regional plan outright. Here the regional plan is far cheaper than the average country plan, so check both before you pay.

3

Size it for the trip, not the weekTwo weeks across two or three countries usually lands between 5 and 10 GB, though patchy coverage means you often use less than you planned. Use the filters on this page to set a minimum size and length, then compare only what clears the bar.

4

Install before you flyScan the QR code on wifi at home. Installing needs a working connection, which is the one thing you will not have when you land.

Countries

Every destination covered by an Africa plan

These 41 destinations are covered by at least one of the plans on this page. No single plan covers them all, so treat this as the list of places worth checking rather than a promise. Several of these plans also reach countries outside the region, which is worth knowing if your trip crosses into one. Each name links to its own price comparison.

Questions

Africa eSIM FAQ

The questions people actually ask before buying a multi country plan

What is the cheapest Africa eSIM right now?

Ranked by real price per GB, the cheapest is Horizon eSIM at $26.33 for 20 GB over 30 Days, which works out to $1.32 per GB across 6 countries. Prices move, and the table on this page is re-ranked every time our catalogue refreshes.

How many countries does an Africa eSIM cover?

It varies by plan, which is the single most important thing to check. Across the 644 plans we track, the widest is CloudOn at 36 countries on one eSIM. Others cover far fewer. Always open the plan and read its country list before you pay.

Which is the best Africa eSIM?

Best depends on the trip, so we rank rather than pick one name. On today's prices the best value is Horizon eSIM at $1.32 per GB, while the widest coverage is CloudOn with 36 countries on one eSIM. For heavy daily use there are 331 unlimited plans with daily fair use caps. Every pick is the first row of a sort on live prices, and no provider can pay for it.

Is an Africa eSIM cheaper than buying one eSIM per country?

On a normal trip size, which we take as 5 to 50 GB over at least 15 days, the cheapest Africa regional plan works out at $1.32 per GB (Horizon eSIM, 20 GB for 30 Days at $26.33). The average of the cheapest single country plan at that same size, across the 47 countries we price here, is $3.49 per GB. The regional plan is the clear winner here, by a wide margin, even before you count the convenience. The countries at the cheap end of the region still undercut it, so check your main stop before you decide.

Do Africa eSIM plans offer unlimited data?

331 of the 644 plans here are sold as unlimited. In practice almost all of them are fair use: full speed up to a daily allowance, then slower for the rest of the day. The daily allowances on these plans currently run from 0.5 GB to 10 GB. That is why unlimited plans carry no price per GB in our table: there is no per GB rate to compare.

Why are African eSIM plans so expensive?

There is no continent wide roaming framework, so every country on a regional plan is a separate wholesale deal for the provider. Those costs are passed through. It is the reason the per gigabyte figures in the table sit above every other region we track.

Is a regional Africa plan better value than a single country plan?

Often yes, which is unusual. In most regions the single country plan is cheaper. In Africa the comparison on this page frequently falls the other way, so check both numbers before you buy.

Do these plans work in rural areas and on safari?

Only where a network reaches, and in much of the continent that means 3G or nothing. Treat connectivity as a bonus outside towns and download everything you need in advance.

Can I top up if I run out mid trip?

287 of the 644 plans here can be topped up, so you add data instead of buying a second eSIM. The rest need a fresh plan. Topping up is normally dearer per GB than sizing the plan correctly at the start.

How much data will I actually need?

Two weeks across two or three countries usually lands between 5 and 10 GB, though patchy coverage means you often use less than you planned. Use the filters on this page to set a minimum size and compare only the plans that clear it.

Will I keep my own number and still get bank codes?

Yes, as long as you leave your home SIM active. These are data only eSIMs and your phone can run both at once. Keep the home line on for SMS and one time codes, switch its roaming data off, and use the eSIM for everything else.

Do these plans include calls or a phone number?

No. The plans we compare are data only, so there is no local number to give out. Calls work normally over WhatsApp, FaceTime or any app that runs on data. If you need a real local number, a local SIM is the right tool.

Compare another region

Every region we track, ranked by the cheapest real price per GB, sits on the regional and global eSIM hub. If your trip stays in one country, the country by country comparison will nearly always be cheaper.
